So What Do You Think?

Our minds are machines that NEVER stop. At least mine sure doesn’t. I think about what needs to be done and how I can complete the task with efficiency. Other times I’ll think of the people in my life, my beautiful surroundings, feel excited about what opportunities lie ahead or I’ll replay treasured memories in my mind. I enjoy thinking about new ideas and find myself writing them with colored markers on giant wall post-it notes. However most importantly, I always think about how lucky I am for each and every day; for today. In doing a quick Google search I found that we can have up to 70,000 thoughts per day. That’s a crazy amount but I would not doubt it for a second because sometimes when I want to go to sleep I can’t because my mind won’t stop talking to itself. It’s like it’s having a conversation and when I came across this photo it enticed my thoughts even further.

This clever Mercedes-Benz ad depicts our idiosyncratic mind. The wording on the ad says:

Left Brain

I am the left brain.

I am a scientist. A mathematician.

I love the familiar. I categorize. I am accurate. Linear.

Analytical. Strategic. I am practical.

Always in control. A master of words and language.

Realistic. I calculate equations and play with numbers.

I am order. I am logic.

I know exactly who I am.

Right Brain

I am the right brain.

I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion.

Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter.

I am taste. The feeling of sand beneath bare feet.

I am movement. Vivid colors.

I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas.

I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel.

I am everything I want to be.

This just may explain that conversations do happen, in disagreement and in collaborations within our minds. I can see how sometimes when making a decision we weight the Left and Right sides before making our decision. Then other times, we’ll use the sensible reality of the left with the spontaneous uncertainty of the right to create something that is truly exquisite.

Do you find yourself thinking about what side of your brain you use more? I suppose it’s only natural for the Left Brainer to be thinking this right now because you want clarity and seek justification. If you found yourself admiring the colorful symbolic art then perhaps you’re slightly more of a Right Brainer. To say the least we obviously use both sides and I believe that constant exercise for our minds is a good thing. Love to learn or learn to love to learn and you just may surprise yourself one day!

In conclusion of this post I would like to share an inspiring TED Talk given by Temple Grandin. Her words on ‘The World Needs All Kinds of Minds’ will leave you with a warm heart and thinking with a new pespective. 70,000 thoughts a day won’t be hard to reach now. So what do you think?!
